Rabbit Dachshund

A rabbit dachshund, also known as a Kaninchen Dachshund, is the smallest variation of the dachshund breed.

These tiny dogs typically weigh between 8 to 11 pounds (3.6 to 5 kilograms) and stand around 8 to 9 inches (20 to 23 centimeters) tall – making them smaller than any other dachshund breed.

Origins Of A Rabbit Dachshund & Characteristics

Originally bred in Germany, rabbit dachshunds were specifically developed for hunting small prey like rabbits – hence their name “Kaninchen,” which means “rabbit” in German.

They share the classic dachshund characteristics of a long body and short legs, designed to navigate tight underground burrows.

The rabbit dachshund is available in three coat types – short-haired with smooth and shiny look, long-haired and wire-haired with dense, slightly bristly coat and undercoat.

Rabbit dachshunds are known for being brave and fearless, highly energetic, intelligent and trainable, loyal and affectionate and stubborn and independent.

Despite their small size, these dogs have a strong hunting instinct and are not afraid to stand up to larger animals.

They are perfect for apartment living and families with limited space, while still providing a courageous and spirited companion.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) does not recognize the rabbit dachshund as a separate variety but the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) recognizes the rabbit dachshund as a third, smaller size of dachshund.

Differences Between a Rabbit Dachshund & a Miniature Dachshund

The main differences between a rabbit dachshund and a miniature dachshund are primarily related to their size and recognition by kennel clubs.

Both rabbit and miniature dachshunds share the characteristic long body and short legs of the breed, but the rabbit variety is notably smaller in all dimensions.

The rabbit dachshund can weigh up to 3.5 kg (7.7 lbs) for males and up to 3 kg (6.6 lbs) for females, while miniature dachshunds typically weigh between 8 to 11 pounds (3.6 to 5 kilograms).

Due to their smaller size, rabbit dachshunds, generally require less exercise than their miniature counterparts.

Rabbit Dachshunds Temperament Compared To Standard Dachshunds

Rabbit and standard dachshunds share many temperament traits, but there are some notable differences.

Rabbits are smaller and more energetic compared to standard dachshunds, tend to be playful and sociable, enjoying an active lifestyle. Standard dachshunds, may be less energetic and more prone to napping.

Both types can be stubborn, but rabbit dachshunds may require more patience in training due to their high energy levels. Both also have a strong prey drive due to their hunting background.

Standard dachshunds are often described as more independent, while rabbit dachshunds may be more dependent on their owners due to their social nature.

Are Rabbit Dachshunds Suitable For Families With Young Children

Rabbit dachshunds can be suitable for families with young children, but careful introduction and supervision are key.

These small dogs are playful, energetic and friendly, which makes them potentially good family companions, but children must be taught how to properly interact with the dog.

Supervision is always necessary, especially with very young children and the dog should never be left alone with babies or small children.
